Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection // I've been an academic and operational student of terrorism, and its prevention - "anti-terrorism" - since 9/11. I underwent certification as a Level II DoD Anti-Terrorism Officer (ATO) in January of 2009, re-certified in 2011, certified as an Executive Close Protection Officer in 2013, and completed my Physical Security Professional (PSP) certification in January of 2022. Between 2010 and 2012, I acted as the staff anti-terrorism advisor for the Joint Program Office for Mine-Resistent and Ambushed-Protected Vehicles (JPO-MRAP), based in Kuwait with oversight for the Gulf Region. While the bulk of my professional experience focuses on the the Middle East and South Asia, a great deal of my academic study focuses on the Oregon Rajneeshee Crisis of the early 1980's.
Travel Advisory // I took my first overseas trip in 2003, and continue to travel whenever I'm able. This has included trips to straightforward destinations like London and Paris, as well as more unorthodox destinations like Muscat and Beirut. I've provided travel security advisory services to a variety of organizations, and developed a specialty in data security for travel to countries known for aggressive state-sponsored espionage.
Vulnerability Management // Building upon my extensive background in information security, I was called upon to build - from scratch - a vulnerability management program to serve the needs of my current employer. This has involved the analysis of scan data to identify vulnerability patterns, and the communication of this data to system owner teams in order to drive remediation and system hardening. In under twelve months, I was able to facilitate an 80% reduction in Internet-facing Critical and High vulnerabilities.
Third Party Risk Management // Several of my roles have involved the administration of due diligence checks on third party vendors, particularly cloud vendors, to ensure that organizational data was being securely stored and processed when entrusted to parties outside the direct control of the organization. In my current capacity, I'm in the process of building a third party risk portfolio to ensure periodic reviews, enabling a holistic understanding of organizational third party risk.
Data Center Security // I leverage my physical expertise, and my experience as a security control assessor, to evaluate data centers and cloud infrastructure.
Strategic Analysis // Although the vast majority of my professional experience has focused on various security disciplines, I completed my master's degree, summa cum laude, in Strategic Studies, the discipline of international relations focusing on statecraft and armed conflict. Whenever possible, I apply this skill set to my work in security risk management. I consider myself conversant on strategic security concerns around the globe, but have focused my advanced study upon the Middle East, and particularly the Gulf Region consisting of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Sultanate of Oman.
